John Galliano's racist comments

Like many others, I was shocked when I heard that John Galliano was suspended. Apparently he made some very horrible anti-semantic remarks towards some people in a Parisian café. I couldn’t believe it! Gallliano is fabulous, therefore there was no way he could say something so horrible… but it’s true. I found the video, and it’s pretty bad.

In it he says, “People like you would be dead. Your mothers, your forefathers, would all be fucking gassed.”

I thought to myself – oh dear it can’t possibly get any worse than that…

“I love Hitler.”

What?! Is he crazy?! He’s a huge fashion figure. He’s the artistic director of one of the biggest fashion houses in the world (or should I say was?). He works in a huge multicultural industry.

So WHY would he say something so horrible and stupid?

I don’t get it: I don’t want to believe that he’s racist, but it’s hard to deny. Especially when the evidence is there.

Racism is an evil and outdated mind frame

Admittedly though he sounds drunk, very drunk. I honestly believe that when under the influence of alcohol, most people reveal their true natures. They also do very stupid things (hence why I limit my alcohol intake – for fear of becoming some kind of drunken monster.) but not even that’s a good enough excuse: he shouldn’t have gone out in public that drunk, in the first place!

Amusingly, Galliano has launched legal action against Ms Bloch and Mr Virgitti (the people he verbally assaulted) for defamation.

We live in a diverse and rich multicultural world, where no one is better than anybody else, and although I love Galliano and his work. I believe that for what he said – he deserved the punishment that he received.
